BAR HARBOR – John W. Phippen Sr., 87, passed away April 28, 2007, after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Bar Harbor, the son of the late Chester M. and Adelia (Reed) Phippen. John was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked for almost 60 years as a mechanic. John was a lifelong member of the Mount Desert Masonic Lodge and also a member of the American Legion, Trenton. He especially enjoyed watching his son race cars and loved to spend time with his grandchildren. John was a founding member of the Town Hill Pentecostal Lighthouse Church. John is survived by his children, John Phippen Jr. and wife, Deborah, of Town Hill, Nancy Greenlaw and husband, Fred, of Trenton, Theresa Edwards and husband, Michael, of Aberdeen, Wash., and Ruth Tracy and husband, James, of Surry; 12 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Althea; daughter, Pearle Mitchell; and granddaughter, Christina Greenlaw. A graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Desert Masonic Lodge, P.O. Box 316, Mount Desert, ME 04660.
