SILVER RIDGE – John Whitman Allen died Jan. 2, 2004, at Houlton. He was born July 6, 1912, at Ballardvale, Mass., the son of Francis and Essie (Craig) Allen. John married Margaret Turner on Aug. 31, 1940. John was a loving and devoted husband and father. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Benedicta, and a World War II veteran. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one son, David; four brothers, Raymond, Mansfield, Kenneth and Eugene; and one sister, Mary Holmes. In addition to his wife he is survived by eight sons, John of LaGrange, Robert of Bradford, Garry of Charleston, Timothy of Milo, Thomas and Mark, both of Bradford, Andrew of Bangor and Anthony of Milford, Conn.; seven daughters, Jean Gross of Penobscot, Rebecca Smith of Milo, Joyce Black of Silver Ridge, Rosalie Gallant of Appleton, June Rush of Dexter, Joan Thibodeau and Frances Bouchard, both of Silver Ridge; a brother, Paul of Orrington; four sisters, Dorothy Werner of York, Pa., Margaret Wescott and Ethel Burgess, both of Bucksport and Carol Foss of Orland; 69 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Family and friends may call 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed at 3 p.m. The Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. A remembrance of John’s life will immediately follow the Rosary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Benedicta with Father Pare presiding. Spring interment will be at St. Benedict’s Cemetery.
