MACHIAS – John Worcester of 6 Free St., Machias died peacefully at home sur-rounded by loving family Feb. 19, 2005, after a long illness. He was born March 23, 1921, at Jonesboro, the son of Frank A. and Etta Campbell Worcester. Educated at home by his mother until the last term of the eighth grade, he graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1937 and from Washington State Normal School in Ma-chias in 1940. After teaching at Machiasport and Addison, he enlisted in the Navy’s Aviation Cadet Program in 1943, receiving his Navy wings at Pensacola in May 1944. Having been selected for instructor duty, he was trained at the Navy’s Instrument Flight Instructor School at Atlanta and then taught Instrument Flight at Pensacola for one year before being promoted to instructor at Atlanta. Discharged from the Navy in 1946, he served as principal of Jonesboro High School during the 1946-1947 school year and attended the University of Maine at Orono in 1947-1948, receiving a B.S. in Ed. degree in 1948. From 1948 to 1951, he was the Washington County 4-H Club Agent for the University of Maine Extension Service. In 1951, he became an agent for the Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. and served in that capacity for 32 years until his retirement in 1983. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Eleanor Holland; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Sharon Worcester of Jonesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Opal and Steve Apsega of Ellsworth; five grandchildren, Stephen Apsega and wife, Glenna, of Orrington, Laurie Harnish and husband, Tom, of Hermon, Ja-red, Cassandra and Caroline Worcester of Jonesboro; a great-grandson, Kinnon Ap-sega of Orrington; and two cousins, Maizie Campbell of New York and Lura Perry of Milbridge. He was always deeply concerned about animal welfare and did what he could to promote it. At his request, there will be no visiting hours or final ceremonies and following cremation, ashes will be handled by the family.
