PORTLAND – Johnathan Thomas Foss, 23, formerly of Lincolnville, died Monday, July 31, 2006. He was born Aug. 25, 1982, in Machias, the son of Peter H. and Leslie Smith. His father died when he was 13, and Johnathan wrote a poem to him that was printed in a newspaper. This was something he just instinctively knew how to do, his family said. He could pull poetry right out of the air. Growing up in Lincolnville with his mother and stepfather, Duane Smith, he attended Camden-Rockport High School, and last year earned his general equivalency diploma. He earned his living as a cook and landscaper, and had cooked several summers for Bay View Lobster at Camden Harbor. After moving to Portland in October 2005, he worked all winter as a cook and then went back to landscaping. Johnathan loved to hunt and fish, and took his first deer in the fall of 2005. Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Leslie and Duane Smith of Lincolnville; grandparents, Lester and Rachel Foss of Bangor, and Thomas and Carolyne Smith of Jonesboro; several aunts and uncles, including a special aunt, Lisa “Teet” Foss of Camden, who was like a second mother to him; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends, including special friend Lindsey Bodamer of Camden. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at the Laite Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at the First Congregational Church, 55 Elm St., Camden, with Pastor Jerry Stone officiating. Memorial gifts can be made to Knox County Fish and Game Association, P.O. Box 414, Union, ME 04862.
