ELLSWORTH – Joseph “Joe” Albert Tufts, 81, died Feb. 14, 2004, at Russell Park Rehabilitation and Living Center, Lewiston. He was born March 25, 1922, in Ellsworth, the son of Joseph A. and Bessie A. (Carter) Tufts Sr. Joe was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during World War II in the 100th Infantry Division. He was a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono with a BA in music education, minoring in Mathematics. He taught music for 35 years in the towns of Lincoln, Houlton and Millinocket. He had been an avid hunter and fisherman. Joe was a member of the David A. Hooper Lodge No. 201 AF & AM of Sullivan. Joe is survived by his wife of 60 years Alice B. (Perkins) Tufts; two sons, Joseph A. Tufts III and wife, Janet, of Scarborough, and Timothy R. Tufts and wife, Irene, of Hancock; one daughter, Mary E. Brushwein and husband, Philip, of Danville; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Brushwein and Todd A. Tufts and wife, Andrea; two great-grandchildren, Clelia and Macin Tufts. He will also be remembered by a special friend, Anna Pomroy of Hancock. Friends are invited to call 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where Masonic service will be held at 2 p.m. Spring interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Hancock.
