ELLSWORTH – Joseph Henry LaCasce, M.D., died Sept. 30, 2007, at his home after a long illness. He was born Jan. 2, 1926, the third son of Elroy O. LaCasce and Marion Steward LaCasce. Joe graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1943 and Bowdoin College in 1946. After teaching math and coaching skiing and tennis for six years, he went to Harvard Medical School, graduating in 1957. After an internship and three years residency in internal medicine, he joined the staff at Tufts School of Medicine for two years, teaching and conducting research. In 1963 he moved to Ellsworth, where he practiced medicine for the next 33 years, retiring at age 70. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, W. Deanna LaCasce of Ellsworth; a brother, Professor Elroy O. LaCasce of Brunswick; a brother, Charles LaCasce of Fryeburg; a brother, Dr. Steward LaCasce and his partner, Robert, of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, Dr. Joseph H. LaCasce Jr. and his wife, Dr. Cecilie Mauritzen, and their two sons, Johannes and Sebastian, of Oslo, Norway; a daughter, Dr. Ann LaCasce and her husband, Dr. Edward Ackerman, and their son, Henry, of Needham, Mass.; and a daughter, Barbara LaCasce and her husband, John Salzig, and their daughter, Eden, of Surry. His happiest memories were of summers with his family at Sebago Lake and Winter Harbor. The family thanks the dedicated nurses, doctors and staff at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, The Mary Dow Cancer Center, Hancock County Home Care and CancerCare of Maine for the excellent care Joe received. He felt privileged to have been in their care and comforted by their kindness. In accordance with his wishes, there will be a family burial at a later date.
