EDEN, N.C. – Joseph Kinglsey Skillings Jr., 83, of 2002 River Chase, Eden, N.C., died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem, N.C., after a short illness. A native of Melrose, Mass., he was a son of the late Joseph Kingsley and Eileen Minnehan Skillings and had lived in Rockingham County for 14 years. Prior to graduating from Centre College in Danville, Ky., he played on the Yankee’s farm team remaining forever an avid sports fan. He was proud to have been a U.S. Marine having served six years during World War II. Retiring from Texaco, Inc., in 1975 he pursued his favorite hobbies, golfing and gardening. He was a member of the Men’s Garden Club of Reidsville, a founding member of the Milbridge Historical Society, member of Leaksville United Methodist Church and worked with the Rockingham Literacy Program. He is survived by his wife, Irma Bergthold Skillings, of the home; two daughters, Martha S. Long of Ruffin, N.C., Jane P. Thompson of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Greg L. Paulson of Minneapolis, Minn., Joseph K. Skillings III of Seattle, Ore.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Edith Ward of Kennebunk and Eileen Stuhlreyer of Savannah, Ga. Memorial services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Leaksville United Methodist Church. The family will see friends following the memorial service in the fellowship hall of Leaksville United Methodist Church.
