HANCOCK – Joseph V. Carter Jr., 64, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born July 31, 1940, in Hancock, the son of Joseph V. and Patricia L. (Tracy) Carter. Joe was a lifelong resident of Hancock, where he owned and operated a bush hogging business. In past years, during the winter months, he worked at Colwell Diesel in Hancock as a diesel mechanic. Joe was always willing to help anyone, and was active with the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was well known in the town of Hancock, and when he wasn’t working, he could often be found at the Tideway Market or the Franklin Trading Post, enjoying conversation about most any topic of local or national interest. Joe served the town of Hancock as a member of the School Board, and was given a special recognition award by the State of Maine or having served 25 years consecutively on the Hancock School Board. At the time of his death, Joe was still an active member of the School Board. He will be missed by all who knew him. Joe is survived by his stepmother, Winnifred Carter; two children, Karena Carter Sawyer and her husband, Tom, of Gouldsboro and Joseph V. Carter III and his companion, Elizabeth and her son, Robin Carter; three sisters, Gladys Carter Rea and her husband, Maxelle Jr. of Portland, Jennifer Carter Hobden of Londonderry, N.H. and Carol Carter Leeman; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his loving companion, Pat Smith and will be missed by her family. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth.
