BUCKSPORT – Josephine E. Smith, 91, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at the home of her daughter, with her loving family by her side. She was born March 28, 1916, a daughter of George and Bertha (Quint) Bickford, in North Anson. Josephine married Maynard L. Smith, June 11, 1936, and were married 63 years at the time of Maynard’s death, April 30, 2000. She was a 50-year member of Felicity No. 195 Order of Eastern Star serving the organization as district deputy, grand matron and grand representative. Josephine also served as a board member to Rainbow Girls No. 5 for 15 years. She was also a member of North Bucksport United Methodist Church. Josephine is survived by her children and their families, son, Richard L. Smith and his wife, Sandra, and their children, Ceretta, Roy and Sue, son, Robert L. Smith and his sons, Steven, Scott, Jeffrey and Mark, son, James A. Smith and his wife, Helen, and their children, Jimmy, Marjorie, Lori, Wendy and Cathy, daughter, Mary Woodman and her husband, Harry, and their children, Troy and Dean; a special granddaughter, Robbie, who helped care for Josephine the last year of her life; and a foster daughter, Edith Tate. She is also survived by 28 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews; special friends, Ken and Gail Darveau and Ruth Kettell. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Maynard L. Smith; and siblings, David Bickford, Granville Bickford, Merwin Bickford and Myra Henry. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Millvale, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. In lieu of flowers donations in Josephine’s memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Home Health and Hospice, St. Joseph’s Health Care Park, 900 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
