DOTHAN, Ala. – Josephine Godwin Cannon, 83, a resident of Dothan, Ala., died Friday, May 26, 2006, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. Mrs. Cannon was born Oct. 28, 1922, in Ocala, Fla. and lived the early years of her life in Dunnellon, Fla. She was employed with WexTex for seven years and later at Southeast Alabama Medical Center for 31 years retiring in 1986, as a unit secretary. Mrs. Cannon served as a volunteer at the medical center for 11 years. She was a member of the WMU, Dothan Rescue Ladies Mission Auxiliary and the Dothan Wiregrass Art League. She attended Bible studies at First Baptist Church, Southside Baptist Church and Memphis Baptist Church. Mrs. Cannon was a member of Memphis Baptist Church for 46 years and she taught the Joyful Sunday School class. Mrs. Cannon is predeceased by her husband, Arthur Lewis Cannon Sr. Survivors include six children, Virginia Carol Crenshaw of Dothan, Ala., Arthur Lewis Cannon Jr. and his wife, Janice, of Dothan, Ala., William David Cannon and his wife, Rose, of Gordon, Ala., Vivian Gay Stewart of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Donna Thornton and her husband, Gary, of Dothan, Ala., Jeanne Rhoda Walding and her husband, Barth, of Dothan, Ala.; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grand-children and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28, at Memphis Baptist Church with the rev. Ernest O’Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Memphis Baptist Church Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to Memphis Baptist Church. Serving as active pallbearers will be Stanley Cannon, David Cannon Jr., Matt Walding, Chris Hatcher, Clayton Robinson and Gary Thornton.
