HARRISON – Josephine Gold passed away peacefully July 29, 2006, at her daughter’s home while in hospice care, after a long battle with cancer. She was born Dec. 4, 1928, in Blue Hill, to Lester and Maidene Pettengill. She grew up in Blue Hill, graduated from George Stevens Academy and attended Salem State Teachers College in Massachusetts. Jo was a long-time resident of Portland and loved the outdoors, sitting in the park, working in her yard year-round and spending time with her family. Her cats were her babies and the neighborhood cats had a good friend they could always rely on. Josephine was predeceased by her husband, Myron Gold, a retired Portland police officer. She is survived by her two daughters, Julie Neill of Harrison, Leslie McCrillis, of Gorham; her son, Andrew Gold of Portland; six siblings, Lorraine Dolley of Falmouth, Betty Dill of Gray, William Pettengill of Sedgwick, Sheila Varnum of Holden, Rodney Pettengill of Sibley, Mo., Gailen Carter of Chicago; and three grandchildren, Christopher Stearns, Zachary McCrillis and Lydia McCrillis. A memory gathering will be held 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge Rd., Casco.
