BANGOR – Joyce Ellen (Evans) Butler, 63, wife of the late Owen Butler, passed away unexpectedly Sept. 28, 2005, at a local hospital after a brief illness. She was born Feb. 21, 1942, in Skowhegan, the daughter of Lawson and Gladys (Haines) Evans. She was educated in Hampden and Bangor schools and graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1960. Joyce first worked as a secretary at Grant’s Dairy in Bangor, where she met and fell in love with her husband of 33 years who passed away in 1994. Over the next three decades, Owen and Joyce worked in several jobs at Maine’s Harness horse racetracks and agricultural fairs, including the former Lewiston Raceway, Bangor Raceway and State Fair, and many others. This was the “time of their lives.” During this time many old friends will fondly recall that Joyce became known as the “Odd Broad” due to her “pioneering” role as the first woman working in the “calc room” and figuring the wagering odds at the races. For a time in recent years, Joyce worked as a teller at Bangor Federal Credit Union. She later returned to the racing world when she began working again as a pari-mutuel teller at Miller’s OTB and, most recently, Bangor Raceway OTB where she was known so well by so many for so long. She is survived by four sons, Steven and his wife, Leigh, of Bangor, William of San Diego, Calif., Douglas and his wife, Jeanne, of Newport, Paul and his wife, Angela, of Bangor; one sister, Barbara Cabell; three brothers, Colby, John, and Lawson Evans; seven grandchildren, Pauline, Alexandra, John, Mary, Brandon, Katherine, Thomas; several nieces, nephews; her special in-laws and many, many devoted friends. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her granddaughter, Grace Rebecca Butler. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Scott Cleveland and the Rev. William Preble, officiating. Friends may call from noon until time of the service at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor. If you would like to remember Joyce in a special way contributions may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, Maine Affiliate, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101 or to Hospice of St. Joseph, Attn: Nicole Heanssler, P.O.
