IMPERIAL, Calif. – Judith Havel Workman died Feb. 19, 2005, from complications of stroke and cancer at her home in Imperial, Calif. She was born Judith Diane Jirousek on Aug. 17, 1942, to Helga N. Peterson and John J. Jirousek in Oak Park, Ill. Her father died in combat during World War II soon after she was born. She was adopted by Louis Havel after her mother remarried. She graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 1964, with a Bachelor of Music. In 1965, she married Lawrence Workman with whom she had a son, Alexander, in 1976. She later attended graduate school at Northwestern, University of Illinois, and Syracuse University. She taught elementary music and band in Armstrong, Ill. After moving to Fort Kent, in 1969, she directed the junior high school band and then the high school band in the local school district, SAD No. 27. During her career she returned to the Eastman School of Music and obtained her Master of Music degree in 1987. Afterwards, she started a string program at the elementary school in Fort Kent. She retired from the school district in 1997. During her 30-year career in education, she also taught piano at the University of Maine at Fort Kent and privately at her home. After moving to Imperial, Calif. in 1999, she continued to teach piano and was a member of the Imperial Valley Symphony. She was a pupil of Joseph Mariano and John Thomas at the Eastman School of Music. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; and her son, Alexander.
