WATERVILLE – Julian Page Thompson, 91, a respected Maine educator, died Nov. 21, 2005, in Bangor. Julian was born March 2, 1914, in Kingfield, the son of Frank and Mabel Page Thompson. Julian graduated from Kingfield High School in 1931 and Farmington Normal School in 1933. He later earned both a bachelors and a masters degree from the University of Maine at Orono. On Aug. 20, 1936, he married Estella E. Nelson, of New Gloucester, with whom he shared his life for nearly 65 years. He began his career in education in Carrabassett, where he served 28 pupils K-8. Later, he was a teacher in Stratton and then both a teacher and principal at the Abraham Lincoln School in Bangor (1938-1949). He also served as a superintendent of schools for 23 years. His superintendent positions were in Rangley, Newport and Corinna; and Skowhegan and Madison. He retired from MSAD No. 59 in 1971. Julian was a 60-year member of the Mount Abram Lodge AF & AM in Kingfield and a former member of the Newport Kiwanis Club and the Rangeley and Skowhegan Rotary Clubs. He was a past president of the Bangor Teacher’s Club and held a life membership in the National Education Association, the Maine Teacher’s Association, and an honorary lifetime membership in the Maine School Superintendents’ Association. An outdoor enthusiast, Julian enjoyed fishing, hunting, skiing and golf. He belonged to the Biggest Bucks in Maine Club. Following his retirement, he and his wife made their home in Waterville and enjoyed 16 winters in Florida. Julia is survived by his daughter, Ava Judith Chandler of Bangor; and son, John Alan Thompson and wife, Vicky, of Rumford; grandchildren, Julie A. Chandler of Cumberland, Amy C. Harmon and husband, Ryan, of Eliot, Kristopher J. Thompson of Wilsons Mills and Jason A. Thompson of Las Vegas, Nev.; great-grandsons, Jacob and Nicholas Small and Jack Harmon. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Estella, in 2001; son-in-law, Garth K. Chandler in 2004; and three brothers, Dr. Cecil, Fred and Austin; and sister, Hildred Moore; and many nieces and nephews. At Julian’s request there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. A committal service will be noon Saturday, Nov. 26, at Sunnyside Cemetery in Kingfield with the Rev. Paul Dibden officiating (If there is pending weather conditions call Smart & Edwards Funeral Home). Donations may be made in Julian’s memory to the Kingfield Public Library, Kingfield, ME 04947. Arrangements are under the direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
