KAREN J. LEIGHTON GLENBURN and KENDUSKEAG – Karen J. (Bowden) Leighton, 41, devoted mother of Danielle J. Leighton, lost her hard fought battle with cancer on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003. She was born on Sept. 30, 1962, in Bangor, the daughter of Wilfred “Bud” and Doris (Smith) Bowden of Kenduskeag. Karen graduated from Central High School of East Corinth in 1980 and Beal College in 1983. She has been a dedicated employee of Eastern Maine Medical Center in patient account services since 1993, where she has made many special friendships. Karen dedicated her life to the love of her life, her daughter whom she considered her greatest accomplishment. She adored and loved her more than anything else in the world. The pride and admiration Karen and Danielle had for each other was evident to all who knew them. Karen found great enjoyment making her crafts, shopping, spending time with friends and family and watching Danielle grow up. Surviving in addition to her father and mother of Kenduskeag; and her daughter, Danielle of Glenburn, are her brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Dianne Bowden of Bangor, and Rick and Gina Bowden; and her very special nephew, Ryan of Levant; her first nephew, Andrew and his wife, Kimberly Bowden, of Holden, and their daughter, Brooke. She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Cleve and Ethel Smith; and her paternal grandparents, Ford and Nellie Bowden. She will be greatly missed by her many, many friends, co-workers and family members. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Eastern Maine Medical Center, especially to the staff of Cancer Care of Maine and the ICU floor for their overwhelming support, professionalism and sensitivity. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson, Chaplain of Husson College, officiating. Interment will be held in the Kenduskeag Village Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments at the Kenduskeag Union Church, 826 Kenduskeag-Levant Road, following the service on Monday.
