WINTERPORT – Katharine Annie (Gifford) Woodward, 98, passed away July 24, 2005, at a Bangor hospital, after a brief illness. She was born March 4, 1907, in Greenbush, the daughter of Lewis and Gertrude (Dennis) Gifford. Katharine attended Bucksport schools and Bucksport Seminary. She was a graduate of Eastern State Normal School, Class of 1929. Katharine was a school teacher, and had taught in Bucksport, Olamon, Etna, Greenbush, Bancroft, and Levant. In 2004, Katharine was the recipient of the Winterport Boston Post Cane, for being the oldest resident of Winterport. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Woodward, in 1993; a son, Leroy Betters, in 1995; and a daughter, Ellen Gehrke, in 2003. Katharine is survived by her children, James Colson of Astor, Fla., Gifford Colson of Winterport, Judith Nickerson of Winterport, and Louis Betters of Corinth, two step-children, Bernadine Tate of Corinth, and Marie Sweers, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, step-gran-dchildren, great-stepgrandchil-dren and great-great-stepgrandchildren. Interment will be private at Sunny Slope Cemetery, Gould’s Ridge, Passadumkeag. Arrangements entrusted to the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Avenue, Hampden.
