BELFAST – Kathleen M. Knight, 90, passed away peacefully Jan. 20, 2007, at Waldo County General Hospital Hospice Unit, Belfast, after a brief illness. She was born May 23, 1916, in Woodsville, N.H., daughter of James and Betsy Demeritt. She graduated from Woodsville High in 1935, Keene Normal School in 1938 and University of Maine – Orono in 1964 as a history major. In 1940 she married William A. Knight in Wells River, Vt., and moved to Bridgeport, Conn., where their two sons were born. In 1948 they moved to Belfast. Kathleen taught school for several years in Swanville, Northport and Belfast schools retiring in 1974. She enjoyed her retirement, loved to be at home baking Christmas cookies especially for her grandchildren and knitting them mittens. The Red Sox was her team, she loved to listen to them on her radio and in the winter months enjoyed listening to the University of Maine hockey team. Kathleen was predeceased by her husband, William in 1982; a grandson, William II; sister, Muriel; and two brothers, Bud and John. She is survived by her sons, William and his wife, Julie, and children, Jessica, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Marie, Ethan and stepson, Matt, and Harvey and his wife, Carol and their children, Christopher and Heather; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Beatrice of Wells River, Vt.; several nieces and nephews. She leaves behind special friends, Ruby Hills, Dot Robertson and Dale Kuhert, who spent many hours in her kitchen and kept her flowers looking well. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the First Church, Belfast, with the Rev. Kate Winters officiating.
