NEWPORT – Keith E. Shorey, 72, died peacefully July 9, 2008, at a Bangor hospital, after a short period of ill health. He was born Oct. 21, 1935, in Newport, the son of Elmer G. and Hazel (Maguire) Shorey. He was educated in Newport schools and was a graduate of Newport High School, Class of 1953. Keith married Anita C. Burbury, May 4, 1956, in Newport. Keith was employed for several years as a hand sewer for Dexter Shoe Co., Dexter. For more than 50 years, he was self-employed as a contract U.S. mail hauler with routes throughout the state of Maine. He owned and operated Shorey Oil Co. and several convenience stores in Newport and St. Albans. He was a former member of Newport Fire Department, serving as a captain. He served on MSAD 48 school board for 21 years, seven as its chairman. For the past 13 years, Keith and Anita enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states.Keith is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anita C. Shorey of Newport; four sons, Brian K. Shorey of Thorndike, Wyatt K. Shorey of Whitefield, Todd E. Shorey of Newport and Eric P. Shorey of Newport; one brother, Richard Shorey of Decatur, Ill.; one sister, Elaine Plummer of Zephyrhills, Fla.; five grandchildren, Chad, Otto, Kali, Ryan and Adam; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 13, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport. Private family services will be conducted at a later date.
