CHARLTON, Mass., and ST. ALBANS – Kenneth H. Lane, 78, died Thursday, Sept 21, 2006, surrounded by his family at his home. He was born in Sherman Mills, the son of Harold and Florence (Buzzell) Lane and lived in Maine for 48 years before moving to Massachusetts. Kenneth was employed for the past 30 years by the Worcester Department of Public Works, where he cut the grass around the city reservoirs using his team of draft horses. He was also the driver for the popular sleigh and hay rides at the Salem Cross Inn, West Brookfield, Mass., and did many private hayrides, sleigh rides and weddings. His casket was carried by his favorite horse, “Bucky” and driven by his grandsons, Paul and Zack, to the Salem Cross Inn after his funeral services. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lorraine (Neal) Lane of Charlton, Mass.; a son, Dennis Weeks of Texas; five daughters, Nancy Lane and David Greene of Newport, Darlene Lawler and her husband, Paul, of Dixmont, Kandas Bates and Darren Greene of Palmyra, Lori Fall and her husband, Kevin, of Wilbraham, Mass., Ronica Moriarty of Carlton, Mass.; one brother, Robert Lane; four sisters, Joyce Michuald, Gloria Willegar, Karen Faulkner, Kendra Chisholm; 17 grandchildren, Rhonda Burton, Tim Davis, Denise Cleveland, Paul Lawler, Kenny Lawler, Ivan Bates, Megan Fall, Doug Bates, Melissa Marin, Holly Bates, Matthew Fall, Valerie Dean, Mark Moriarty, Hillary Bates, Timmy Moriarty, Zachary Moriarty, Mariah Moriarty; 20 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by his parents, his stepmother, Mildred (McAlpine) Lane; his brother, Joel Lane; his grandson, Herbert J. Bates III; three great-grandchildren, Jackie Davis, Brandon Cleveland and Ethan Cleveland. Committal services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Village Cemetery, St. Albans with Pastor Pemper officiating. His favorite horse will carry him to the cemetery.
