PLEASANT POINT – Kenneth J. Bassett, 83, died Sunday, March 16, 2008. Kenneth was born Feb. 1, 1925, in Pleasant Point, son of George and Margaret (Polis) Bassett Sr. After graduating from high school, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in Normandy as a medic during World War II. After the war, Kenneth enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps as a military police. He served in the Battle of Chosen Reservoir, where he was captured and held as a prisoner of war for two years and nine months. Kenneth was predeceased by his wife, Veronica (Tomah) Bassett; a son, Elvis; and a sister, Frances. Surviving are his children, Sophia Paul, Jamie Murphy, Travis Murphy, Gidget Newell, Joyce Doten, Robert Tomah, Kenneth Murphy and Brenda Breeze; two brothers, George Jr. and Lane Bassett; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends may call starting noon Wednesday until 9 a.m. Thursday at his home, 31 Back Road, Pleasant Point. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann Catholic Church, Pleasant Point.
