DEER ISLE – Kenneth M. Gross, 91, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at a Deer Isle healthcare facility. He was born Oct. 23, 1913, on Vinalhaven, the son of Henry M. and Vennie R. (Hopkins) Gross. Kenneth was a fisherman for many years with his father in Stonington. In 1960, he and his wife, Vennie (Dorr) Gross, moved to Massachusetts and worked at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Mass., returning to Stonington during the summer months. In 1978, Kenneth and Vennie retired to Stonington, moving to Deer Isle in 1988. In 1993, Vennie passed away after 54 years of marriage. Kenneth is survived by a daughter, Donna L. Stinson and her husband, Arnold, of Deer Isle; two grandsons, David W. Stinson of Phoenix, Ariz. and Richard A. Stinson of Deer Isle; two special sisters-in-law, Louisa Gross and Peggy Small, both of Deer Isle; a stepdaughter, Alice Spencer and her husband, Richard, of Stonington; two stepsons, Melvin Hutchinson and his wife, Janet, of Stonington and David Hutchinson and his wife, Joanne, of Hollywood, Fla.; many stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents and his first wife, Kenneth was predeceased by his second wife, Dorothea (McGaddis) Gross; a sister, Caroline Lanpher; and three brothers, George, Ralph and Virgil Gross. Graveside funeral services will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery, Oceanville, at a date to be announced in the springtime. Arrangements are by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Stonington.
