MACHIASPORT – Jane C. (MacGregor) Armstrong, 80, wife of the late John W. Armstrong, died peacefully Feb. 14, 2005. She was born Oct. 24, 1924, in West Orange, N.J., the daughter of James A. and Grace E. (Cooper) MacGregor. Jane was a graduate of Nutley N.J. High School and Madonna College in Michigan, and received her Master’s Degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. She taught second grade for many years at the Gallimore School in Plymouth, Mich., before retiring to Machiasport, where she was an active member and Past President of the Machiasport Historical Society. Jane was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and served the Maine State DAR as State Historian, State Curator, and held several chairmanships. Locally, she served two terms as regent of the Hannah Weston Chapter of the DAR and was currently the Corresponding Secretary. Previously, Jane belonged to the Framingham, Mass., DAR Chapter and the Sarah Ann Cochran DAR in Northville, Mich. Jane loved to garden and was Past President of the St. Croix Valley International Garden Club and Past President of the St. Croix District Garden Club Federation of Maine. She had many other interests and was proud of establishing a program that brought great art to the Plymouth, Mich., school system, and brought the Art Train to Plymouth. For many years she belonged to Questers of Michigan and continued her membership in the Orient Chapter of Eastern Star and Centre Street Church. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Patrick McCarthy of Machias; three grandchildren, Jillian, Ian, and James McCarthy; and by her sister-in-law Kathy MacGregor. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and her brother James MacGregor. A memorial service celebrating Jane’s life will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Centre Street Church, Machias. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a contribution in Jane’s name to the Machiasport Historical Society or the Hannah Weston Chapter of the DAR.
