ELLSWORTH – Kenneth Warren Merritt, 82, died April 15, 2005, at a Bangor hospital, of pneumonia and pulmonary complications. He was born Jan. 14, 1923, in Epping, N.H., the oldest son of Warren and Alma (Moore) Merritt. He attended and was graduated from Saugus (Massachusetts) High School. During World War II, he served in the Intelligence Service of the U.S. Navy. After that conflict, he attended and was graduated from Tufts University. While stationed in Ellsworth during World War II, he met and married in 1945, Lucia Marion Smith, his wife of 59 years, by whom he is survived. He is also survived by his son, Peter K. Merritt; his daughter-in-law, Cynthia (Ashcraft) Merritt; and his granddaughter, Madeline R. Merritt. Also surviving are two nephews, Alan Merritt of Saugus, Mass. and David Merrit of Ipswich, Mass.; and a niece, Kimberly Dorsett of Gotha, Fla. Finally should be mentioned his beloved granddog, Mitci. Kenneth’s business career spanned 39 years of devoted and appreciated service as director of purchases for Mercantile Stores Corporation, a retail chain in the central United States, where he made numerous life-long friends, who enjoyed his generous but somewhat cantankerous nature. A graveside memorial service is planned for late July.
