BANGOR and OLD TOWN Kent A. Wakefield, 93, died Dec. 11, 2007, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Aug. 27, 1914, in Erie, Pa. Kent served four plus years during World War II, primarily as officer of Ammunition Supply Ships. During the Anzio Italian Invasion, he was one of the very few survivors of his ships bombardment. He survived after a sea rescue and many months of hospitalization. Kent spent his childhood growing up in Pittsburgh with his parents, brother and sister. He spoke often of the many wonderful times they shared traveling and attending baseball and football games. He received a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He worked for many years as a professional chemical engineer employed by Monsanto Corporation as a world-wide chemical lubricant application specialist. His retirement years were devoted to helping others. His volunteer work included tutoring University of Maine in Orono, students in calculus; gave swimming lessons to Bangor Seniors and taught adults to read. With his love of music and his skill playing various instruments he performed for many gatherings and was noted for his sing-a-longs. Kent lived for many happy years at the Bangor House. To all of us who knew him, Kent was a remarkable person who was loving, intelligent, passionate, and greatly respected. He was predeceased by his wife of many years, Florence. He is survived by many friends including, Angie and Bernie Possidente, and their daughter, Jan, Peter Phillips and Donna Roberts. A graveside funeral service will be held noon Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Beth Israel Cemetery, Bangor, with Rabbi Darah R. Lerner, of Congregation Beth El, officiating.
