HOULTON – Lala P. Adams, better known as “Ducky,” 106, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2006, at the Houlton Regional Hospital after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 9, 1899, in N.B., Canada, and was the current holder of the Boston Post Cane for the oldest living resident of the town of Houlton. She was married twice, with her first husband, George W. Curran, passing away in 1968. Later, after she moved back to Houlton, she married Mahlon Adams, who also predeceased her in 1987. Lala lived in Bedford, N.H., with her family until the death of her husband, George, at which time she moved back to Houlton. She was one of nine children of the Varney family and was predeceased by three sisters, Violet, Elsie, Lydia; and five brothers, Hammy, Angus, Ray, Harold, and Walter. Lala and George had one daughter, Margarette Woodward, who passed away in 2003. She is survived by two granddaughters, Marilyn Peterson Leesburgh of Florida and Janet Magneson of Hallowell; five great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Alice Varney; a very special niece, Tootie Britton; and Lala’s beloved and long time companion, Paul the parrot. At Lala’s request there will be no funeral service at this time, but for her many friends there will be a memorial service held after the first of May.
