STEUBEN – Lawrence Erwin Alley Sr., 66, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at an Ellsworth hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 4, 1938, in Beals, the son of Harold C. and Sylvina E. (Carver) Alley. Lawrence graduated from Beals High School, Class of 1955, and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a bachelor’s degree in Education. He was a teacher for several years, first at Beals High School, where he was math and science teacher, principal, and was a coach. Following his service at Beals, Lawrence taught math at Sumner High School in Sullivan until 1972. Since that time, he has been a fisherman and Captain of the “Flying A” and Lobster Poundkeeper in Steuben. Lawrence was a member of the Anah Temple Shrine in Bangor, Jonesport Lodge No. 188, AF & AM in Jonesport, the Maine Lobster Association and the Maine Lobster Pound Association, and the Moose Lodge in Zephyrhills, Fla. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Frances A. (Crowley) Alley of Steuben; three children, Lawrence E. Alley Jr. and his wife, Mimi, of Hancock, Gary C. Alley of Steuben and his former wife, Mary Alice, of Sullivan, and Sylvina Ruth Lyons and her husband, Shawn, of Beals; eight grandchildren, Liza Fisher and her husband, Tim, Ben Alley and his wife, Aime?, Morgan Alley, Rohanna Madigan and her husband, Chris, Blake Alley, Curtis Alley, Harold Lyons, and Samuel Lyons; a sister, Lorena Kelley and her husband, Willard, of Steuben; a brother-in-law, John Crowley and his wife, Brenda, of Addison; an uncle, Guy Carver Jr. and his wife, Ruth, of Beals; three aunts, Mina Kent and Martha Fagonde, both of Beals and Hildreth Alley of Gouldsboro; nieces and nephews, Kathy White, Charles Kelley, Rebecca Stewart, Estelle Peabody, Melissa Anair, John Crowley Jr., and Sasha Crowley; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Lawrence was predeceased by a nephew, Willard M. Kelley, Jr. Graveside funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Carver Family Cemetery, Beals, with Elder Dwight Carver officiating.
