DEXTER – Lawrence “Sam” Dawson, 80, went home to be with the Lord May 23, 2007, at a Dexter health care facility. He was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Haynesville, a son of Elijah and Ruby (Alexander) Dawson. He served in the Army of Occupation, Japan, at the end of World War II, as a military policeman. He also served in the Houlton Police Department and worked at Houlton Farms Dairy for more than 30 years. He loved bowling and especially bingo at Dexter Health Care, winning many stuffed animals, which he then gave to the little ones who came to visit him. Sam was an honorable member of the Dexter Pentecostal Church. He is survived by his second wife, Anne Dawson of Dexter; a son, Larry Dawson of Bangor; a daughter, Lynn and husband, David Gates, of Houlton; three granddaughters, Kylie and husband, Derek, of Ellsworth, Katie Gates and her boyfriend, Rob Gilbert, of Brewer, and Karen Gates of Houlton; a grandson, Kody Gates of Houlton; a special great-granddaughter, Samantha Lynn Campbell of Ellsworth, of whom he was very proud; a brother, Howard Dawson of Buzzard’s Bay, Mass.; three stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife of 46 years, Laila Dawson; and their 9-month-old son, Lee. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at Crosby & Neal, 61 Main St., Dexter, with the Rev. Lyman Curtis officiating. Friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of the services at the funeral home. A graveside committal service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton, with the Rev. Wayne Robertson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dexter Health Care Patient Activities Fund or to the Salvation Army Fuel Fund.
