STETSON – Lena M. Paine, 89, a gentle and loving soul, died at her home in Stetson Jan. 21, 2005, after a brief illness. She was born a twin on May 17, 1915 in North Newport, a daughter of George and Mildred (Taylor) Cochran. She graduated from Newport High School in 1934 and the Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. Lena spent the next 50 years as a Registered Nurse and another seven years as a private duty nurse and companion. In addition to her family and friends, she enjoyed bingo, scratch tickets, crossword puzzles and her precious kitty “Oreo”. She was a member of the Mystic Grange in Kenduskeag. In addition to her parents, Lena was predeceased by a brother, Terrance Cochran; and sisters, Pauline Gipson, Dorothy Gallison, her twin Leola Harrison; husband, Ernest Paine; and ex-husband, Curtis DeWitt. Lena is survived by her daughter, Janet and husband, Charles Leighton, of Stetson; son, George and wife, Linda DeWitt, of Waterboro; five grandsons, two granddaughters, 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Lena will be greatly missed, not only by her family, but by two special ladies who were like her daughter and granddaughter, Brenda Clark and Frannie Hair. Friends may call from 2-3 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Newport, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, with the Rev. George Perkins officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot, Riverside Cemetery, Newport.
