ORNEVILLE – Leo Mitsin, 63, of Philpot Ridge Road, Orneville Township, died April 21, 2008, as the result of an accident. He was born in East Douglas, Mass., a son of Kristo and Mary (Peters) Mitsin. He attended and graduated from school in East Douglas, Mass. Mr. Mitsin was a decorated serviceman in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received eight air medals, five gold stars and a silver star for his service in the Vietnam War. While serving in Vietnam, Sgt. Mitsin served as a door gunner in “Huey” helicopters and was attached to unit VMA 6, which flew hundreds of missions out of Chu Lai, Da Nang and Saigon. He was also assigned to protecting dignitaries such as Gen. Walt from his helicopter. After his service to the country, Leo worked and retired from Mobil Pipeline Co., as a pipeline supervisor. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed activities such as hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. Leo was a member of Westbrook American Legion, Westbrook Eagles, VFW, NRA and Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carol (Johnson) Mitsin; and his parents. Leo is survived by his sons, Jason Mitsin and his wife, Jessica, of Hollis and Brian Mitsin and his wife, Tasha, of Standish; brothers, Peter Mitsin of Georgia and Steve Mitsin of East Douglas, Mass.; and grandchildren, Taylor Grace Carol Mitsin, Austin Mitsin, Dalton Mitsin and Dylan (Ricci) Mitsin. Visiting hours will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, corner of Routes 202 and 4A, 13 Portland Road, Buxton (Bar Mills). A funeral service with U.S. Marine Corps honors will be held 11 a.m. Friday at LifeChurch, New Portland Road, Gorham. A reception will be afterward at the Westbrook Eagles.
