PRESQUE ISLE and MAPLETON – Leon Archer, 89, beloved and dedicated husband of Evelyn C. Erickson Archer, went home to be with our Lord on April 29, 2004. He was born Sept. 7, 1914, in Mapleton, son of Melvin and Cora Wyman Archer. Leon and Evelyn Archer were married in Stockholm Baptist Parsonage on Nov. 4, 1933. Leon was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last September. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing horseshoes with his team in Florida, where he won many awards. He also enjoyed bowling and cribbage. In his early years, he worked in farming here in Maine, and then moved to Avoca, N.Y., where they lived for more than 40 years. After retiring from the Avoca Central School department they moved back to Maine, and resided in Presque Isle until recently moving to Caribou. For many seasons they wintered in Florida, where they made friends and had many wonderful memories. Leon is survived by his wife; one son, Allan Archer and his wife, Evelyn, of Benson Ariz.; one grandson, Mark Allen Archer and his wife, Mary; two granddaughters, Brenda Lee Smith and her husband, Scott, and Lynn Archer; two great-grandchildren, Derek Scott Smith and Danielle Nicole Smith, all of Benson, Ariz.; two sisters, Avis Spear of Milo, and Helen Finnemore of Mapleton; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Goronson and husband, Alton, of Derby, Fla., Ina Noel and husband, Paul, of Milbury, Mass., Clarice Helstrom and husband, Marshall, of New Sweden, Rosella Anderson of Caribou, Thelma Anderson of Caribou, and Francine Anderson of New Sweden; two brothers-in-law, Clifton Anderson and wife, Irma, of New Sweden, Gilbert “Mickey” and wife, Gloria, of Millbury, Mass. Fond memories of several special nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at a later date and will be announced by Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou.
