NORTHPORT – Leon F. Lord passed away Friday, July 15, 2005, at his residence in Northport. He was born Oct. 26, 1915, the son of Erving and Mabel (Blackwell) Lord. Leon was a graduate of Lawrence High School, Class of 1933. He married Alice Louese Ricker in 1939. For more than 25 years, Leon was active in the market garden business. He operated the largest farm market in Somerset County, “Lord’s Farm Market”, for several years. In 1951, Leon went into the poultry business. He produced market eggs on his own farm and also operated 11 contracted farms in his expanding business. In 1965, Leon was awarded outstanding farmer of the year from the University of Maine at Orono. He also owned and operated Lord’s Quality Feed; a poultry feed business, for 10 years. In 1977, Leon started to phase out his poultry business. He also owned and operated the Lord Hen House Restaurant as well. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fairfield where he served as treasurer and chairman of the finance committee, member of the Benton Grange, lifetime member of the Siloam Lodge AF & AM and Merry Meeting Chapter O.E.S., 32 degree Mason, and a member of the Kora Chapter Shrine Club of Lewiston. Leon was also past president of The American Farm Bureau Federation of Somerset County, past president of the National Farm Loan Association of Waterville, past president of the Maine Poultry Improvement Association of Somerset County, and a member of the Somerset County Extension Association. Leon also served as councilman of Fairfield for four years, was a member of the budget committee, and served a five-year term as a member of the Fairfield School District. He was past president of the Fairfield Kiwanis Club as well. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Louese who passed away April 17, 1984; and by his daughter, Nancy L. Lord. He is survived by one son, Edward R. Lord of Northport; and one nephew, Fred E. Lord of Austin, Texas. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 18, 2005, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, with the Rev. David Johnston officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery,Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leon’s memory to the Shawmut Chapel or to the Belfast Public Library, 106 High St., Belfast, ME 04915.
