ELLSWORTH – Leon L. Johnson, 73, died at a Bangor hospital on March 20, 2004. He was born April 16, 1930, in Stamford, Conn., the son of G. Clifton Johnson and Katherine (Dennison) Johnson. He was a graduate of Machias High School and the University of Maine. He served in the Army during the Korean War. A civil engineer, he spent two years with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads before beginning a 35-year career with the Maine Department of Transportation. At the time of his retirement in 1993, he was Division Engineer and was responsible for maintenance of the State Highway System in Hancock and Washington counties. He was a Registered Professional Engineer and a Registered Land Surveyor. He was a 50-year member of Lodge No. 91 AF & AM in Machias. He had been a member of Washington Chapter No. 16 RAM and St. Elmo Commandry No. 18 in Machias. He had also been a member of the Senator Hale Hose Company of the Ellsworth Fire Department. He was a member of American Legion Hancock Memorial Post 207. He was a long time member of the United Baptist Church in Ellsworth. He belonged to the Gideons International and was active in the Hancock County Camp. He is survived by his wife, Natalie Parker Johnson of Ellsworth; his son, Scott D. Johnson of Weare, N.H.; two sisters, Karen Brooks of Hampden, and Sherrill Danico and her husband, Roland, of Auburn; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife, Susie Beal Johnson in 1992. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 25, 2004, at the United Baptist Church, Hancock St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. Dr. Branan Becknell and Pastor Robert Maddocks. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery in Ellsworth. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.
