BANGOR – Leonard “Frank” Ireland, 71, passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, surrounded by family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 12, 1936, in Brewer, the son of the late Frank P. and Melissa L. (Copeland) Ireland. Frank served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the USS Alstede AF-48, with an honorable discharge in July 1962. He was employed by the city of Brewer as a heavy equipment operator and foreman for 30 years, where he retired in 1997. He is survived by his loving companion of 23 years, Gloria J. Cyr of Bangor; her brother, James LeGuff; his three daughters, Kimberly Ireland of Baileyville, Jenny Zimmerschied and her husband, Doug, of Bangor, and Amanda Ireland of Eddington; his brother, Robert Ireland of Arizona; his sister, Carolynn and her husband, Terri Webber, of Westbrook; his aunt, Barbara Johnson of Dedham; his aunt, Edith Sealy of Orrington; his uncle, David Copeland of California; his two stepchildren, Matthew Cyr of Bucksport, and Michael and his wife, Jennifer Cyr, of Orrington; his nine grandchildren, Nicole Greenlaw, Cody and Joel Reynolds, Gabrielle, Jack and Gunther Cyr, Zachery, Hannah and Cooper Cyr; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Frank was loved by many, many people and will be especially missed by good friends, John and Laurie Karnes, and their three children, Jesse, Collin and Maggie of Bangor. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Cassandra Greenlaw; and her daughter, Kylie; also his stepson, David Cyr. At Frank’s request, there will be no memorial service. An open house for family and friends will be held 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Frank’s home, 7 Old Orchard Drive, Bangor. In lieu of flowers, Frank has requested donations be made in his memory to CancerCare of Maine, 489 State St., Bangor, ME 04401or Make-a-Wish Foundation of Maine, 87 Elm St., Suite 203, Camden, ME 04843. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
