ORONO – Leonard G. Johnson Jr., 82, died Saturday, April 21, 2007, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 18, 1924, in Oak Park, Ill., son of Leonard G. Johnson Sr. and Corinne M. Carlson. Leonard was a longtime resident of Mount Prospect, Ill., and was a charter member of the South Church, established in 1937. He was a graduate of Arlington High School, and attended Iowa State University and the University of Alabama. Leonard was a World War II Army veteran and served as an officer in Nurnberg, Germany, where he met his wife, Babette Rottner. They were married Aug. 1, 1947, at the South Church. Leonard enjoyed camping and fishing with his family. He served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 223, Mount Prospect, for more than 10 years. He was an avid and talented golfer and an accomplished watercolor artist, whose landscape paintings depict his love for art and the outdoors. Len worked for more than five decades as a business executive in the textile industry, before his retirement from QST Industries. He enjoyed his retirement years living beside the golf course at Bermuda Run Country Club, North Carolina, then settled in Orono, at Dirigo Pines Retirement Community with his Scottish terrier, Kye. Leonard is survived by Babette “Betty” Johnson of Orono; son, Thomas Johnson of Rochester, Ill.; daughter, Diane Wagner of Orono; and sister, Jacquelyn Dick of Mount Prospect, Ill. Grandpa will be missed by nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, David Johnson of Lakeland, Minn., in 1996; and by his sister, Patricia Ayres. Private family services arranged by Brookings-Smith, Bangor.
