MILFORD – Leonard “Larry” J. Pelkey, 95, died Friday, June 15, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. He was born July 2, 1911, in Island Falls, the son of William Joseph and Charlotte (Lottie) Cooling Pelkey. Larry spent his life working at Great Northern Paper Co., lumber camps and as a pulpwood contractor in Penobscot County. He loved horses and always had a team to work with. He was also an avid Red Sox fan and followed the team from the time he was a small boy sitting on his grandfather’s knee, reading the scores from the Bangor Daily. He was pro-bably one of their oldest fans. He is survived by 16 children, Marion Fischer of Wasilla, Alaska, Lucy Andrews of Windsor Locks, Conn., Evelyn Ireland of Milford, Alice Combs of Richford, Vt., Clara Cox of St. Cloud, Fla., Thomas J. Pelkey of Eddington, Eileen Carey of West Enfield, Agnes Whitcomb of Milford, with whom Larry resided, Phillip Pelkey of Enosburg Falls, Vt., Mary Martin of Bucksport, Cynthia Furlotte of Bangor, Christine Young of Red Level, Ala., John Pelkey of Montgomery, Vt., Maurice Pelkey of Greenbush, Vera Averil of Old Town and Brian Pelkey of Washington; three sisters, Ruth “Tootsie” Pelletier, Leona “Rose” Fitzgerald and Mildred “Bobbie” Mattall, all of Millinocket; and two brothers, Chester “Chet” Pelkey of East Millinocket and William “Johnny” of Seattle. He was “Grampie” to 45 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were very special to him. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Clara Michaud Pelkey; and two sons, Leonard (Bud) Pelkey and Charles Henry. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Parish, Old Town. Committal will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery, Old Town, after the service. Friends and family are invited back to Holy Family Parish Hall for a luncheon and continued fellowship after the burial.
