ORLAND – Leroy S. Saunders, 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. Born March 13, 1930, in Orland, a son of Harvey and Bertella (Ware) Saunders, one of 11 children. Leroy was a volunteer for Orland Fire Department for more than 50 years. He retired as a state employee after working most of his adult life for the highway department. He was a member of Victory Grange No. 538 and also enjoyed hunting. He was predeceased by his wife, Jacqueline (Carlisle) Saunders; sisters and brothers, Annette, Clara, Hudson, Paul Merle and Harvey Jr. Leroy is survived by one son, Roy Saunders and his partner, Nanita Hardie, and their daughter, Josulynn; four sisters, Dorothy “Lina” Billings, Hilda Saunders, Emma Simmons and Virginia Farren; sister-in-law, Ruth Saunders; as well as many nieces and nephews. Family and friends will gather for visitation 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, where a funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Bucksport. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Leroy’s memory may be made to the Orland Fire Department, P.O Box 254, Orland, ME 04472.
