HAMPDEN – Lester Edwin Henderson, 79, passed away peacefully Dec. 1, 2006, at his home. He was born July 3, 1927, in Lynn, Mass., the son of Frank Lester Henderson and Alice Frances (Leatszch). Lester lived in Lynn, Mass., and Salem, Mass., for most of his life before moving to Hampden 15 years ago. He entered the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II and later went on to serve his country again in the Korean War, serving on the USS Manchester as a Fireman 1st Class in boiler operations. Les was a retired U.S. Postal Service letter carrier. He enjoyed gardening, working outside his home and other outdoor activities. Lester was a member of the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church and the church choir. He was also active in the VFW as a member and past commander of the Whitcomb-Baker VFW Post No. 4633, Hampden; and past commander of VFW District No. 4, for the state of Maine. Les volunteered at the Maine Veterans’ Homes, Bangor, and was a former volunteer at the Ronald MacDonald House, Bangor. Lester was a man of structure, quick wit and compassion. Lester is survived by his son, Dr. Mark Lester Hen-derson and his wife, Christine, of Hampden; three sisters, Avis, Elizabeth and Dorothy; four grandchildren, Christina and Michael Calitri, Timothy and Rachel Henderson; the mother of his children, Jill Henderson of Danvers, Mass., nieces, nephews; and a special friend, Frances Bowen of Hampden. He was predeceased by his daughter, Denise M. Calitri March 2006; and by a brother, Edwin Henderson. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, 44 Kennebec Road, Hampden, with the Rev. Dr. Debra J. Hanson, pastor, officiating. A continued time of remembrance and refreshments will be after the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
