BANGOR – Lewellyn Richard Michaud, 77, died peacefully Nov. 10, 2003, at his residence in Bangor. He was born Sept. 11, 1926, in Fort Kent, the son of Joseph and Mary Alice (Madore) Michaud. Lew served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, being honorably discharged in 1946. He worked as a staff assistant in the office of Congressman Glen Davis, of Wisconsin, in Washington, D.C., as an undergraduate during college. Lew opened his first law office in 1954 in Orono, after graduating from the George Washington University with a bachelor of arts and law degree. Gov. Edmand Muskie appointed him as a trial justice for Penobscot County in 1956. Lew was the Chairman of “Youths for Eisenhower” in Orono in 1956, and the Treasurer of the Orono Republican Committee. He was a Maine delegate at the 1960 Republican National Convention, and was the State Chairman of Maine Young Republicans Club through 1964, and a member of the District of Columbia Young Republican Club. He was an interim Maine State Senator Successor in 1961. Lew chaired many clubs and civic organizations in and around the Bangor area including Jaycees and Kiwanis and helped establish the first Chapter of the NAACP in Bangor in the early 1960s. A native of Fort Kent, Lew graduated from St. Ignatious High School, Sanford. He resided in Orono from 1954 through 1968, and thereafter resided and practiced law in Bangor through 2003. He is survived by his beloved wife and companion, Eva Michaud; children, a son, Richard Michaud and his wife, Marge Rabinovitch, of Newton, Mass.; a daughter, Janet Michaud, of Corea; a son, Daniel Michaud and his wife, Kimberly, of Milton, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Janet Braga and her husband, Christopher, of Sullivan; a sister, Yvette O’Brien; and brother, Gilbert Michaud and wife, Lou, of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Michael and David Michaud, Jared and Miller Michaud, Sara and Annie Rabinovitch, and special friend and grandson, Rowan Braga; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Patricia Michaud; and his first wife, Patricia Raynolds. Extended family and countless friends loved him dearly and will forever miss his enormous smile, twinkling eyes and incredible sense of humor. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 12 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at St. John’s Catholic Church, York Street, Bangor, with the Very Rev. Richard McLaughlin celebrant. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at Miller’s Restaurant on Main Street, Bangor, immediately following the services.
