ORRINGTON – Lewis Dexter Wheeler, 84, went to be with his Lord Feb. 2, 2008. He was born Jan. 2, 1924, in Manchester, N.H., the son of Dorothy Dexter and Howard Gleason Wheeler. He was a veteran of World War II of the 10th Mountain Ski Troops Division in the mountains of Italy, from 1943 to 1945. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1950 and achieved his Masters of Education at Syracuse University, New York, in 1951. In 1947 he started the Bowdoin Outing Club. He and his wife, Mary, took several students from a wilderness trip camp to climb and rappel mountains in California, Mount Shasta being his favorite. In 1955 Dexter and his young family moved to South Paris to be a part of the family insurance company, W. J. Wheeler Inc. In 1963 God called him back into teaching, this time at Glen Cove Christian Academy, where he was until 1979, when he and Mary moved to Orrington. He was program director at Camp Fair Haven, Brooks, in the early ’70s. Dexter was a devoted husband and father, who loved his family very much. Dexter is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Pomeroy Wheeler; his three children, Susan Wheeler Sady and her husband, Mike, of California, and grandchildren, Barbara Presswood of Houston, Jody Dupuis of California and Ricky England of Bangor; his daughter, Leslie Wheeler England and husband, Randy, of Orrington, and grandchildren, Angela Mock of Pennsylvania, Christopher Rowell of California and Jaime England of Orrington; his son, William J. Wheeler and his wife, Debbie, of Orrington, grandchildren, Kellie LaPlante of Alabama, Benjamin Jordan Wheeler, Eric William Wheeler, Seth Lewis Wheeler and Shelby Lyn Wheeler, all of Orrington. The time and place of a funeral and graveside memorial service will be announced in summer 2008. Memorial contributions may be made in Dexter’s memory to WHCF, P.O. Box 5000, Bangor, ME 04402.
