MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – Dr. Lewis I. Maddocks, PhD of Mar-tinsburg, W.Va., died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at the V.A. Medical Center. He was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Millinocket, the son of the late Daniel W. and Bertha Lewis Maddocks. He received his Masters Degree from Boston University and his PhD from Ohio State University. He was a retired college professor, having taught Constitutional Law and American Government at the College of Wooster in Ohio and the Marywood College in Scranton, Pa. Active in community and church affairs, Dr. Maddocks served from 1961 to 1969 as director of the Council for Christian Social Action of the United Church of Christ in Washington, D.C. and from 1970 to 1973 he held the same position in the New York Office. He wrote articles and spoke to keep church members nationwide informed on special issues of the day. He was a member of Christ Reformed Church in Martinsburg and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Irene Cornell Maddocks, at home; one son, Paul T. Maddocks of Belgrade; and one daughter, Christine Lambert of Olney, Md.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Flora Fairfield of Barrington, R.I. A memorial service was held 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, at Christ Reformed Church with the Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Hartshorn officiating. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Millinocket Cemetery, Millinocket.
