BLAINE – Lewis J. Libby, 83, went home to be with his Lord on April 7, 2004, at a Mars Hill healthcare fac-ility. He was born Oct. 1, 1920, in Blaine, the son of Thomas and Mable (Burtchell) Libby. Lewis graduated from A.C.I. in 1939 with his future wife Beulah. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a radio operator in Naples Foggia, Rome Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and African Theatre. Lewis farmed for several years and then was employed in the civil service at Presque Isle Air Force Base from 1951-1956. He then transferred to the 38th at Loring in June of 1956 as fire chief. In June of 1962, Lewis transferred to Loring Air Force Base Mainside as fire chief and held this position until his retirement in June of 1976. He was a member of the Aroostook Masonic Lodge No. 197 AF & AM of Mars Hill. He served as selectmen in Blaine and served on the board of trustees of the Aroostook Medical Center and corporate board and several committees. He served on the Northern Maine Development Commission Executive Board, General Assembly and Revolving Loan Committee. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Cecil Theriault of Blaine; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Judy Libby of Fort Fairfield; four grandchildren, Lisa Grass and her husband, Neil, of Blaine, Tom Peers and his wife, Lori, of Milford, Del., Tammy Cyr and her husband, Garrett, of Fort Fairfield, and Tyler Libby and his fianc‚e, Melissa Butler, of Fort Fairfield; seven great-grandchildren, Logan Thomas, Lane and Libby Grass, Madison Peers, Janae and Issac Cyr and Toni Libby. He will be remembered by two special nieces, Judy Currier of South Dakota and Michelle DeLong of Blaine. Lewis was predeceased by his loving wife, Beulah, of nearly 59 years; his brother, Kenneth and his wife, Trilby; and one sister, Amy (Libby) Currier. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Duncan Funeral Home, 8 Main St., Mars Hill. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the Old Fashioned Revival Center in Blaine with the Rev. Mark Carter officiating. A spring committal will take place at Tapley Cemetery with military honors.
