HANCOCK – Lila C. Cushing, 91, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at an Ellsworth health care facility. She was born in Coryville Plantation, the third of 13 children born to LaForest and Flora (Harriman) Cochran. She attended local schools and as a young adult worked as a mother’s helper in Calais and Milltown. In 1938, she married Edgar M. Cushing and moved to Woodland, where they lived until 1978 when they moved to Hancock, to be nearer their family. While living in Woodland, Lila attended Peoples Methodist Church, where she also taught Sunday school. She later joined Woodland Baptist Church. She was a member and past president of Woodland Women’s Club. Lila was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed oil painting and flower gardening. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Drugge of Scarborough and Jeanie Downing and her husband, Bill, of Bar Harbor; two grandchildren, Greg Downing and his wife, Tracy, of Ellsworth and Angela Stinchfield and her husband, Mike, of Waterville. Lila’s greatest joy the past two years had been her two great-grandchildren, Mason Downing and Lara Stinchfield. Also surviving are sisters, Verna Willis of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Helena Cochran of Topsfield, Daisy Marin of Falmouth, Maxine Varney of Saco, Alice Six of Old Orchard Beach, Billie Linscott of Auburn and Louise Chapman of Scarborough; her brother, Hiram Cochran of Augusta; a sister-in-law, Roberta Cochran of Limerick; 22 nieces and nephews and their families. Lila was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edgar, in 2003; two brothers, Harold and Charles Ashton; two sisters, Beatrice and Pauline; two nephews and one niece. Calling hours will be held 12:30-2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Spring committal services will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Hancock.
