ELLSWORTH – Lillian A. Griffin, 95, died April 14, 2004, at Courtland Living Center, Ellsworth, where she had resided the past seven years. She was born Jan. 20, 1909, in Monroe, Union County, N.C., the daughter of George Lawrence and Lillie Alice (Hartis) Forbis. She graduated from Boone Teacher’s College, Boone, N.C., and taught several years in Union County schools. Later she was a telephone operator at Southern Bell Telephone Co., Charlotte, N.C. Lillian and her husband, Ray L. Griffin, moved to Maine in 1929. She managed Adams Department Store for more than 20 years. She was a member of Mountain Springs Baptist Church in Monroe, N.C., and attended Lamoine Baptist Church while in Maine. She was also a member of Bayside Grange No. 476, Bayside Women’s Extension, and of the Eastern Star, Irene Chapter O.E.S. No. 97, Ellsworth. She is survived by four children, Joy Mayo, Billy Ray Griffin and long-time companion, Eleanor Theobald, Betty Ray and her husband, George Sr., Alice Upton and her companion, Charles Harding Sr., all of Ellsworth; a brother, Welch Forbis and his wife, Isabelle, of Spring Hill, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Wayne Mayo and companion, Chris Cuskelly, Linda Alley and husband, Ralph, Steven Mayo and wife, Deborah, Peter Mayo and companion, Jill Warren, Harvey Ray Griffin, George Ray Jr. and wife, Carole Ray, Jayne Wixon and husband, David, Daniel Ray and wife, Dawn, Timothy Ray and companion, Danielle Genter, Dawna Archer and husband, Earle, Juli Rae and husband, Donald, Vicki King; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren which included two five generation families. Lillian was predeceased by her husband, Ray L. Griffin; brothers, Verne, Earl, Avery, Jesse, George Clinton, and Carniece Forbis; sisters, Callie Parker, Myrtle Rape, and Cleo Forbis. Memorial and burial services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.
