BANGOR – Lillian Irene (Maki) Souweine, 88, passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, peacefully at Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she was a resident for the last six years. Born and raised in West Barnstable, Lillian was the only child of Fannie Johanna (Lundquist) Maki and Frank Maki. She was the wife of retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Leon Edmund Souweine, her husband of 53 years, who died in 1997. She was the great-granddaughter of Albert Lundquist, the first Finnish settler on Cape Cod, Mass. Lillian graduated from Barnstable High School and Hyannis State Teacher’s College. She taught elementary school in Falmouth before her marriage and then later taught in Kentucky and Germany after she became a military wife. After her husband retired from the U.S. Army in 1962, they returned to make their home in Centerville, Mass. Lillian taught third grade at Hyannis East Elementary School until her retirement. Lillian and her husband were active members of the Cape Cod Kennel Club and Minuteman Schnauzer Club. Lillian loved to travel and spent many winters at her home in Barefoot Bay, Fla., always returning to her beloved Cape Cod, Mass., for the summer. Lillian’s life was centered on the importance of family and education. She was interested in ancestry and spent time researching her family background, as well as that of her husband’s. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was a caring, thoughtful mother and grandmother. She was dearly loved. She is survived by two sons, Dr. Leon E. Souweine Jr. and his wife, Ruth, of Bangor and William F. Souweine and his wife, Jorene, of Centerville, Mass. She was the proud grandmother of Dr. Kristen Souweine and David Souweine of Bangor, Dr. Joshua Souweine of Victor, N.Y., and Matthew Souweine of Marstons Mills, Mass. She also leaves two great-grandchildren, Lillian and Spencer Souweine of Bangor. She was especially fond of two special friends, Billie Kallock and Marion Kerwin, who helped her through the most difficult times. A celebration of Lillian’s life will be held 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 234 French St., Bangor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 103 Texas Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
