She was born Jan. 24, 1925, in Idabel, Okla., the youngest of two other sisters, Addie (Hofer) and Evelin (Sanders). After graduating from Idabel High School in 1943, Lillian joined her sister, Evelin, in Washington, D.C., where she was employed by the Marine Corps as a clerk stenographer. The young women who moved to Washington to help the war effort were referred to as “Government Girls” and have been honored in film and print as members of “The Greatest Generation.” One day at work a young Marine offered to help her carry a load of papers. She accepted. On Dec. 6, 1944, Lillian and this marine, Sgt. Kenneth Wood of Lewiston, were married in Alexandria, Va. When the war ended, the couple moved to Maine, where Kenneth was employed by Northeast Airlines, Augusta. Their son, Brian, was born in 1947. When Kenneth joined the Maine State Police in 1950, the family moved to York County for his first assignment with Troop A, Wells. While in Wells, Lillian worked first at the town office and later at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. They returned to the Augusta area in 1963 and eventually built a home in Farmingdale. Her husband retired from the Maine State Police in 1973, after reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel and serving as deputy chief. He died in 1974. Lillian worked at the Veterans’ Administration, Togus, as chief, loan processing section. She retired in 1989 and was extremely proud of her service to veterans. After retirement, she assisted with the Maine Driver Education and Evaluation Program. Lillian was admired for her steadfastness to work, her sense of humor, her friendliness and enjoyment of entertaining friends at her home. She enjoyed returning home to Oklahoma for family visits. Those who wore a uniform, whether in the Armed Forces or the Maine State Police, always held a special place in her heart.
