DOVER-FOXCROFT and DADE CITY, Fla. – Linwood Joseph “Lindy” Barnes, 87, husband of Emma May (White) Barnes, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, in Dade City, Fla. Lindy was born April 29, 1916, in Skowhegan, the son of Edgar Linwood and Laura (Davis) Barnes. From 1943-1945, he served with the U.S. Navy as a trained radar man for submarines, as well as a “frog man,” and he served on board the U.S. Thomas F. Nicols. After World War II, he completed two years of agricultural technology courses at the University of Maine Extension, and was owner and operator of a dairy farm in Newport. After selling the dairy farm, he became a professional truck driver with Merrill Transport in Bangor, retiring after 30 years. During his career, he drove and maintained millions of safe driving miles and even continued to train new drivers for two years after his retirement. Lindy and his wife of 63 years, Emma, were winter residents of Dade City, Fla., since 1981. He was “Papa” to his children and grandchildren: five daughters, Marlene Barnes of Brownville, the Rev. Lynette Barnes of Plainville, N.Y., Josephine “Dodie” and her husband, Jerry Dunham, of Dover-Foxcroft, Loralee Sue and her husband, Dale Staples, of East Waterboro, and Holly and her husband, Bruce Weymouth, of Charleston; two sons, Daniel and Charles, both of Bangor; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and “Unc” to several beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Carlton Leroy Barnes Sr.; a sister, Helen Fernald; a nephew, Ronald Barnes; and a great-granddaughter, Jennifer L. Thomas. Services will be announced in the spring by the Lary Funeral Home.
