ASHLAND – Loena C. Sutherland, 77, died March 11, 2006, at a Mars Hill healthcare facility. She was born April 21, 1928, in Ashland, the daughter of Albert and Mabel (Kennedy) Boxwell. She was a graduate of Ashland High School and was employed in area offices as a housekeeper for 25 years. Loena was very active in her community and church. She was a member of the Union Congregational Church of Ashland and was a delegate to the United Church of Christ. She was a member of the Ladies Aide Society at the church for 34 years, serving as its treasurer for many years and also as a lay minister. She was a 40-year member of the VFW Auxiliary of Ashland. She served as a volunteer in many capacities, including the Good Shepherd Thrift Shop, the Bread of Life Ministries for cancer patients in the Ashland area, the Aroostook Homemakers and the Ashland Food Pantry. She was involved with Hospice of Aroostook for 10 years and was also a former member of the Ashland Municipal cemetery committee. Loena lived life to the fullest. She was a lady who loved people, most of all her siblings and family. Her spiritual faith brought her peace and patience each and every day. Her greatest joys were spending time with friends, always with a sense of humor, quick wit and positive outlook on life. She was loved because of her ability to make people feel comfortable. She was an avid reader, had a true love of flowers, gardening and crossword puzzles. She is survived by one son, Michael Kelley of Presque Isle; two daughters, Lisa Basley and her husband, David, of Ashland and Lynne Sutherland of Presque Isle; three sisters, Inez McEachern and Hazel Lafland, both of Ashland and Meritta Hinkley of Blaine; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Curtis Sutherland in 1974; three brothers, Hubert, Ervin and Burton Boxwell; and by twin sisters, Mavis Moran and Avis LeClerc. Relatives and friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. until service Wednesday, at the Union Congregational Church, Sheridan Road, Ashland. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the church, with Pastor Nathan Gardiner, officiating. Spring interment will be in the parish cemetery.
