SANFORD, KEENE, N.H., and YUMA, Ariz. – Lois Higgins, 79, lost her battle with cancer and died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at her daughter’s home in Yuma, Ariz. She was born Oct. 14, 1928, in Portland, a daughter of Chester and Georgia Ward. She attended high school in Kennebunk. She and her late husband, Kenneth Higgins lived in Kennebunkport. She loved traveling the U.S. with her sister, Evelyn; and special brother-in-law, Ray Robinson of Dennysville. She also enjoyed her solo drives from Maine to Yuma, Ariz., for the last eight years. She was an avid Red Sox fan, enjoyed reading and spending time with her children, grandchildren and other family members. Lois Higgins worked at Pratt & Whitney, New London Hospital, Sanford Healthcare Facility, Edgewood Centre and also at Lubec Medical Center, until she was 70 years old. Survivors are her daughters, Colleen Woodard and husband, Bernie, of Swanzey, N.H., Carol Delafontaine and husband, Richard, of Yuma, Ariz., and Tracy Laferte of Sanford; and sister, Evelyn Robinson and husband, Ray, of Dennysville. She has 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Kenneth, in 1989; her sister, Mary; and two brothers, Larry and Charles. There will be no calling hours. A private service will be arranged at a later date. Her burial will be at Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made, in the memory of Lois Higgins, Hospice of Yuma, 1824 South 8th Ave., Yuma, AZ 85364. Hospice of Yuma provided loving compassionate care and the family thanks them for all that they did for their mother and sister.
