BROOKS – Lois Brown entered eternal life April 8, 2008, after a brief illness. Lois was born Jan. 30, 1952, in Unity, the daughter of Mable I. and Carl E. Mitchell. She was also the daughter of her stepfather, Donald Mitchell of Troy. In her youth she and her family lived all throuhout the state of Maine, from Allagash, to Wells, to North Haven Island and in between as her father managed various construction projects. She also spent extended stays with her beloved grandparents, Norris and Clarissa Mitchell in Unity. After her mother’s marriage to Donald, she resided in Troy. She mostly attended schools in Unity and Thorndike, and graduated from Mount View High School in 1970. In 1972 she received an Associate Bachelor degree from Husson College, Bangor. After her graduation from Husson College, she married her high school friend, Dana Brown of Monroe, and soon embarked on a lifelong career in medical office management. She and Dana became residents of Pittsfield, in 1976, and it was in Pittsfield that they raised their three children, Kevin N. Brown of Danielson of Conn., Kelli J. Brown of Brewer and Karen B. Hawkes of Hampden. In addition to eternally being mom to her children, she became “mom” to her daughter-in-law, Kristen Graff of Batavia, N.Y., September 1999; and to her son-in-law, James Hawkes of Woolwich, June 2007. She became “grammie” to Aden Brown, December 2006 and to Mitchell Hawkes, March 2008. In 2004, Lois and Dana moved to their new home on Lake Passagassawakeag, Brooks, where she resided until her passing. She was last employed as the director of patient accounts at Sebasticook Valley Hospital, Pittsfield, serving there until she was diagnosed with cancer in late 2004. Although the effects of the extensive surgery required by her illness would not allow her to return to Sebasticook Valley, she took great pride in the fact that she won her battle with cancer. During 2007, she became stricken by a variant of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – ALS, which ultimately, took her life. In addition to her own family, she is survived by two sisters, Leora Mitchell of Ellsworth and Liana Walker of Troy. She was a special “auntie” to her several nieces and nephews and their children. Additionally, she was a special niece to Lloyd and Wilberta (Bert) Mitchell of Liberty, and of Eleanor Tibbetts of Jackson; by her Uncle George Mitchell of Unity; her Aunt Jan, also of Unity; and by Donald’s wife, Linda Mitchell of Pittsfield. There will be a gathering for family and friends 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 14, at First Baptist Church, Pittsfield, where a memorial service will be held 2 p. m. Tuesday, April 15. Those who wish to make a gift in her memory may donate to ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301-5104 or by visiting ALS Association’s website at www.alsa.org.
