SURRY – Lorado “Old Pickle” Carter, 77, passed away on Nov. 26, 2003, after livening things up considerably at the Courtland Living Center where he had been a resident for the past two years. He was born Jan. 14, 1926, in Surry, the son of Albert and Olive (Black) Carter, the youngest of a family of seven children. Lorado attended Surry and Ellsworth schools and graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in electrical engineering. He was employed at St. Regis Paper Co. for 35 years, starting as timekeeper and clerk in the electrical department and advancing to the position of electrical superintendent prior to his retirement. One of his greatest joys in life has been his involvement as minister in the Community of Christ Church serving God and his fellow man wherever and whenever he found the opportunity, including eight years serving as pastor of the Ellsworth congregation and four years as pastor of the Rockland congregation. During the summer months, his vacation time was often given to working with the youths at the church campgrounds at Brooksville, and for many years he was also involved to a great extent in maintaining and improving these campgrounds. Throughout his life, he has also been active in his local community, serving as Surry town moderator for five years and as secretary for the SCIA for a number of years. In his retirement years, he was at last given the opportunity to spend endless happy hours working on his farm and surrounding woodlands, cutting and splitting his firewood and developing nature trails, which groups of young people were then privileged to come and enjoy each year. Lorado is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ellen (Candage) Carter of Surry; three daughters, Sylvia Atherton and her husband, Douglas, of Orland, Andrea Stantial and her husband, George of Maggie Valley, N.C., and Enid Carter and partner, David Flowers, of Westbrook; four grandchildren, Nichole, Aaron, and Dustin Steede and Summer MacKenzie; one sister, Lura Candage and her husband, Douglas, of Surry, several nieces and nephews. He shall be greatly missed, but will always live on in our hearts. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the Community of Christ Church, Route 1A, Ellsworth. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service and celebration of his life 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at the church.
